GEL-SEP "Spatial Energy Planning fo Heat Transition"

This project aims to provide a dynamic basis for spatial heat planning in Styria, Salzburg and Vienna by creating a "heat atlas". Together, the three federal states, their capitals and a large number of pioneer communities and research partners are working on the shared vision.

Dynamic spatial heat planning is to succeed with the introduction of a so-called "HEATatlas" - a database with map display of dynamic heat and cold demand as well as renewable energy potentials and infrastructure in the environment. Based on this, the so-called "HEATapp" prototype is to be developed in the project, which can process automated queries and generate thermal planning analyzes. The results are then applied to selected communities and form the basis for energy planning, checking of alternatives for heat supply, area development, monitoring, etc.

In the pilot region of Styria the heat atlas in Graz, the energy region Weiz-Gleisdorf with 12 municipalities and in Kapfenberg are demonstrated. The stated goal for Styria is the creation of the necessary basis for an efficient energy planning based on a dynamic map display. In order to meet the requirements of a future energy supply (energy-saving, resource-saving, failsafe), it is necessary to give the energy sector an adequate place in spatial development by local authorities and regions. Although today's spatial planning instruments provide a connecting factor for this, but there is currently a lack of a suitable data basis and simple planning instruments. With the heat atlas, heat sources and heat sinks are to be implemented on a small scale with the integration of existing Styrian databases and new data collection into GIS Styria and GIS Graz respectively, thus providing the basis for regional, urban and community development concepts. Intended as basic functionality are the precise characterization and localization of the building stock and energy-relevant infrastructure (local and district heating networks, municipal water and sewage networks), the localization of local resources (biogenic, solar, geothermal, waste heat) and the designation of suitability Priority zones. With the completion of the project, a GIS-based web application should be available for each pilot region as a tool for local and regional spatial and energy planning as well as for the approval of construction projects.
The project "Spatial Energy Planning" is anchored as a subproject in the flagship - region - project "Green Energy Lab".
